Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Anwar Mansoor may resign as pressure has been mounting on him since the meeting of Supreme Judicial Council that deliberated upon the references against Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice KK Agha last week.
The sources said that there are also reports that AGP Anwar Mansoor and Federal Minister of Law and Justice Farogh Naseem are not in good terms with each other. Both Anwar Mansoor and Farogh Naseem were the counsels of General Pervez Musharraf (retd) in the high treason case. The Law Ministry has expressed reservation on his performance in many cases.
The ministry sources believe that Anwar Mansoor was not well prepared while appearing before the SJC and he defended the federal government references against Justice Qazi Faez and Justice KK Agha half-heatedly. After the SJC meeting, the incumbent AGP seemed very upset and did not reply to the journalists' queries about the SJC proceeding.
According to the sources, the Supreme Court office sent a copy of reference to Justice Qazi as the federation did not provide him the reference copy despite the fact he twice wrote letters to President for supply of the same as its contents were leaked to media and a scandalous campaign was also launched against the judge on social media.
Pakistan Bar Councils, Supreme Court Bar Association and provincial bar councils and associations have rejected the references against Justice Qazi Faez and Justice KK Agha and demanded the SJC to reject the references.
If Anwar Manoor resigns then it would be second time that he quits the post of Attorney General for Pakistan. Anwar Mansoor served as the attorney general in Pakistan Peoples Party government. He was appointed AGP in December 2009, but resigned in protest when the then federal law minister (Babar Awan) refused to provide him documents related to the NRO case.
In his resignation sent to the Prime Minister Office, Anwar had maintained that Law Minister and Ministry of Law were not cooperating with him, alleging them of neglecting their duties deliberately. "In view of the situation I found myself unable to perform my duties and resigning from the office under Article 100 of the Constitution," Khan had written in his resignation. Anwar Mansoor had replaced Khalid Javed after the installation of the PTI government.
