An accountability court on Saturday send former Director General Punjab Sports Board, Usman Anwar in remand for 14 days in custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in case of alleged corruption in Punjab Youth Festival organized by PML-N's government.
The NAB had arrested Anwar the other day and produced him before the court to obtain his physical remand. A prosecutor told the court that the suspect being DG of the Sports Board awarded contracts of the youth festivals held in 2011 and 2012 to blue eyed companies in violation of procurement rules.
He said the suspect was directly involved in financial corruption and also committed misuse of authority. He said physical remand of the suspect was required for further investigation.
On the other side, the defence counsel opposed the physical remand of the suspect and said the NAB previously initiated two inquiries on similar charges but closed after finding no evidence of corruption.
The counsel stated that the suspect had been regularly appearing before the investigation team of the NAB and there was no need of his arrest. Judge Jawadul Hassan expressed dismay over the NAB's prosecution team for producing incomplete record of the case.
