Ukraine's 2019 corn harvest may reach last year's record crop of around 36 million tonnes thanks to favourable weather in July, a forecaster said on Tuesday. "Recent rains across most Ukrainian regions and a decrease in temperatures give us a chance to reach last year's (corn) crop level," said Tetyana Adamenko, head of agriculture at Ukraine's state weather forecasting centre.
Ukraine harvested 35.8 million tonnes of corn in 2018 from 4.6 million hectares, with an average yield of 7.84 tonnes per hectare, according to the Ukrainian agriculture ministry.
The ministry has said that farmers sowed a total of 4.7 million hectares of corn this year.
Adamenko said hot and dry weather in June depressed crops but rains and mild temperatures in early July helped corn grow.
"Now is the critical period for corn and we see favourable weather for this period - rains and suitable temperatures," she said.
