ABU DHABI: Qatar shocked four-time champions Japan 3-1 to win their first Asian Cup title on Friday, three years before the resource-rich Gulf nation hosts the World Cup in 2022.
Almoez Ali scored a record ninth goal of the competition as Qatar led 2-0 at half-time, before they conceded for the first time in the tournament as Japan threatened a comeback.
But a video review saw Japan captain Maya Yoshida penalised for handball and Akram Afif calmly restored the two-goal cushion as Qatar earned the biggest win in their history.
