US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Joseph Dunford Jr. welcomed his counterpart, Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, to the Pentagon on Monday with an honour cordon. The visit came shortly after Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan met US President Donald Trump at the White House. Afghanistan was the top item on the agenda of the meetings, with Trump saying he hoped Pakistan would use its influence with the Taliban to advance the peace deal and help end the nearly two-decade old US war.
But there were important issues to discuss beyond Afghanistan, including energy, defence and trade. Pakistan, which is suffering economically, is also looking to reset relations with the US in hopes of securing more investment, trade and possibly a restoration of American aid that Trump cut.
