Like other parts of the country, preparations to celebrate the 72nd Independence Day of Pakistan are in full swing in the provincial capital. A good number of stalls have been set up all over the city to sell national flags, buntings, badges, T-Shirts and other decorative merchandise. The provincial and district governments as well as educational institutions and Art council have planned a series of events in connection with Independence Day.
Flag hoisting ceremonies, seminars, independence walks, folk song performances, dramas on the freedom struggle as well as photographic, painting, poetry and debate competitions have also been planned. Information and Culture department is going to organize a programme "Hum Aik Hain" on August 8 at Alhamra Lahore, to highlight the real purpose of the freedom and to express solidarity with the Kashmiri people.
To finalize the programme a meeting was held at Lahore Arts Council Lahore in which Executive Director Lahore Arts Council Ather Ali Khan, Executive Director Punjab Arts Council Saman Rai and other concerned officers participated. The meeting was informed that artists from all provinces including Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Balistan will participate and perform in the said event. It was also informed that a delegation of the artists from Azad Kashmir is specially invited to participate and perform in the event to show solidarity with Kashmiri people.
These artists will show Kashmiri culture under the flag of "Hum Aik Hain Programme". The purpose of this event is to promote national unity and cohesion. Furthermore, this event will bring provinces together through performing arts especially music and dance. The performances of the artists coming from all provinces will include songs and dances to highlight the culture heritage as well as love for Pakistan. This programme will provide opportunity to Lahoritis to witness the cultural beauty of Pakistan on one platform.
Punjab Schools Education Department (PSED) has also finalised different programmes. National flags will be hoisted on school buildings and different functions will be organised in schools to teach students about the historic background of the Pakistan Movement. Moreover, Punjab University Library has organized poster exhibition on the theme of "Azadi and 14th August" along with farewell party for library interns.
The exhibition was arranged as a project assignment for the students of the Library and Information Science departments of Punjab University, University of Sargodha and Allama Iqbal Open University. Up to 35 students of these universities were provided practical training regarding the conventional and digital services of the library in two months programme. The programme was specially designed to enhance the students' IT base skills ie web designing and creating digital OPAC along with stirring administrative and personality skills. Dr Muhammad Haroon Usmani, Chief Librarian, stated that his mission was to serve the community with all his means and abilities.
