Emphasising the need for early operationalisaion of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in various parts of the country, Prime Minister Imran Khan stated on Friday that providing facilities of gas, electricity, water, and road infrastructure in industrial zones is the foremost priority of the government. The Prime Minister, who chaired a briefing on provision of facilities to SEZs being established and progress so far made to make them operational, stated that the special economic zones are very critical for revival of industrial sector in the country.
He added that operationalisaion of special economic zones will not only accelerate the process of industrialisation in the country and remove difficulties of business community but it would also help create employment opportunities in the country for the youth. The Prime Minister has appointed Chairman Board of Investment Zubair Gillani as focal person for provision of facilities and effective coordination between the federal and provincial governments to make SEZs operational.
The chairman BOI was directed to set a timeline to provide gas, electricity and water in the special economic zones and he would not only submit report to the Prime Minister but would also ensure that these facilities are provided in set time frame. The meeting was attended by minister for planning, minister for power, advisor to prime minister on commerce and textile, advisor on finance, special assistant on petroleum, federal and provincial secretaries and other officials. The chairman BOI briefed the committee on the progress with regard to facilities provided by the government to the industries being established in the SEZs.
