United States President Donald Trump has emphasized the need for regional peace in telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Imran Khan and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. Speaking at an urgent news conference here Monday, Qureshi said that Prime Minister Khan made a telephonic call to President Trump and apprised him of the regional situation in the wake of August 5 illegal steps by Indian government.
He said that Prime Minister Khan briefed President Trump about Pakistan's position and told him that these were the unilateral steps taken by the Indian government. Qureshi said that the steps are aimed at converting the majority of Kashmiri people into a minority in the disputed territory and to change its demography.
He said that the Prime Minister further told the US President that these steps by the Modi government have resulted in the worst situation in the occupied valley and stated the continued curfew in the IOK should be lifted immediately. He said that the Prime Minister conveyed to President Trump that Modi government's August 5 steps have posed serious threats to regional peace and stability and urged him to play his role.
Qureshi said the Prime Minister had earlier on August 16 apprised President Trump about the situations and Pakistan's principled stance. The Foreign Minister further said that President Trump has also spoken to Indian Prime Minister Modi and underscored the need for regional peace.
He further said that Prime Minister Khan presented Pakistan's stance effectively and conveyed that the issue of Kashmir should be resolved in light of the UN Security Council resolutions. He said that the Prime Minister also conveyed Pakistan's concerns over the continued imposition of curfew in the occupied valley for the last 15 days and urged that independent observers of the UN should be sent to the IOK to assess the grave situation. He further said that it was also conveyed that Pakistan wants to reduce tension in the region and resolve all the outstanding issues including the Kashmir dispute peacefully.
