The Punjab government has increased fare of Metro buses by Rs 10 which would slash subsidy by one and a half billion rupees. The new fare has been set as Rs 30 per passenger. Earlier, the authority was charging Rs 20 per passenger. The Punjab government had paid a subsidy of Rs 9 billion to the authority in the last fiscal year. It may be noted that 130,000 passengers commute through metro bus daily with major share of students followed by the labourers. It is interesting to note that the government has earlier withdrawn the decision for increase in fare thrice on public pressure. However, a notification in this regard has been issued after approval from the cabinet.
