As the holy month of Muharram-ul-Haram is fast approaching, the religious leaders and organisers of Majalis expressed dissatisfaction over the poor sanitary conditions at various city neighbourhoods, urging Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to ensure proper sanitation and road carpeting particularly around Masajid and Imambargas, with an immediate effect.
A delegation of representatives of religious organisations, Majalis and Jaloos organisers paid visit to Mayor's office in Old KMC building and convened a meeting with Waseem Akhtar, requesting him to provide a clean environment for the devotees of Imam Hussain (AS) to observe the Muharram rituals.
The participants presented their problems pertaining to sewage overflow, garbage disposal, sanitation, road carpeting, repair and maintenance of street lights and removal of encroachments around the Muharram processions in different areas of the city.
They expressed concerns over the overflowing gutters, and heaps of garbage sprawling around various city roads and streets causing hardships for the pedestrians and the vehicular traffic movement.
However the mayor on this occasion vowed that all available resources will be used to improve the city situation before Muharram-ul-Haram.
He said that the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah is also disturbed due to present scenario and he had in a meeting issued directives for resolving the sewerage issues. Road carpeting will be useless, if sewerage overflow is continued.
Situation will be improved only when sewerage and garbage disposal is done properly. Efforts are on to install new infrastructure for sewerage in Karachi. Waseem asked Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) to provide sweepers for small works.
Sindh Police and Rangers officials were present on this occasion besides deputy mayor Arshad Hasan, metropolitan commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, chairman of district west Izhar Ahmed, chairman district south Malik Fayyaz and vice chairman of Korangi and East were also present along with chairman of city council committees and parliamentary leader Aslam Shah Afridi.
Mayor accepted inefficiency of the government, saying the city condition was bad and people were in great trouble and drinking dirty water. "We need to change the system in our country to bring improvement in the overall condition," he said.
"Giving resignation was an easy option, but I have accepted this challenge," Mayor said. The Article 140-A of constitution regarding local government powers should be implemented as local bodies are considered nursery of democracy and they must be made strong.
He said that he had sought help from the provincial and federal government to provide convenient to citizens, and said, "I thank Bahria Town and FWO for providing help." Mayor said that districts should be given funds as they have the expertise and experience of cleaning the city. KMC will carry out its all functions.
