Barrister Khawar Qureshi, the Pakistani counsel at International Court of Justice in Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav case, said on Monday that the consular access granted to Jadhav will have no effect on his conviction.
While talking to media person at Punjab Bar Council (PBC), Qureshi said, "The ICJ has already rejected requests of India for annulment of his conviction, acquittal, release and return".
He had arrived PBC to deliver a lecture to young lawyers.
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan, Justice Jawad Hassan and former attorney general Ashtar Ausaf Ali also0 graced the occasion.
Qureshi pointed out that India had refused to avail the jurisdiction of high court under Article 199 of the Constitution of Pakistan to seek a review of the conviction.
However, the ICJ in its decision in fact held that the review by the Pakistani court was acceptable and appropriate forum.
Qureshi denied to reply to a question about possibilities and said it would not be appropriate to comment on it as at this time since it was a subject of an active consideration by Pakistan government.
Earlier, Qureshi shared his experiences with the lawyers and made some advises to have good advocacy skills.
He said the lawyers were supposed to defend the rights of oppressed citizens to establish rule of law in a society. Advising the lawyers to never mislead or lied before the courts, Qureshi said he never come across a barrister in United States lying to the courts or seeking adjournments.
Qureshi said there was no shortage of talent in Pakistan in legal sector and announced an essay writing contest for the young law graduates and a cash prize of Rs 100,000 from his personal pocket for the winner. Ends/ September 02, 2019.
