Punjab Higher Education Commission Chairman Professor Dr. Fazal Ahmed Khalid has said that they will request the government to establish Punjab Research Fund for promotion of research culture in the province. While talking to Business Recorder, Fazal called for strengthening industry academia linkages in order to provide jobs to youth. He said during the current year, the government has allocated fewer amounts for the commission as compared to previous year. He said they will formally present recommendations to increase the allocation in the next financial year. He said capable people will be recruited on merit in commission.
Fazal said the commission will increase its pace of work with the support and collaboration of Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and Punjab Higher Education Department. The commission will take decisions for the betterment of higher education system of the province with the consultation of the stakeholders. He said as a regulatory body they will not compromise on the quality of education and rules and regulation. He also said that they will support higher education institutes of the province for enhancing their quality according to the policy of the government.
He further said that they will bring illegal sub-campuses and new campuses of the universities into mainstream and the new degree programs will be issued according to the rules and regulations. He said they will not allow anyone to play with the future of the young generation. It is also the responsibility of the commission to properly train college and university teachers.
While answering a question, the newly-appointed chairman said that they will fully cooperate with HEC Pakistan regarding implementing their policy on illegal campuses. He said they will stop admissions in the programs of the universities which are initiated without following rules and regulations. He said appointment of vice chancellors on merit is a prerequisite of maintaining quality of education in the universities. He further said unemployment will decrease when capable graduates will be available in the market.
He said the government is planning to establish new universities in order to accommodate more students. The process of establishing a new technical and general university for South Punjab will be completed soon. While responding to a question on initiating four years degree programs, he said that policy was made many years ago. He said the PHEC is preparing a PC-1 regarding establishing four community colleges.
While talking about practical training to teachers, he said they are planning to establish an academy for teachers. The commission has started taking input from the Civil Services Academy as well as international institutes like British Council. He said the commission has also started taking practical steps for enhancing the quality of education of the colleges of the province with the support of Provincial Higher Education Department.
