Facebook introduces ‘Tributes’ section for memorialized accounts

Social media platform Facebook is rolling out a new feature for memorialized accounts that will let people leave tributes for the person who passed away.

Facebook has recently created a new designated ‘Tributes’ section for memorialized accounts through which people can leave messages about a loved one who has died.

These messages will be separate from the rest of the profile’s timeline including old posts and comments on the deceased user’s timeline from those shared after the person’s death, reported Tech Crunch.

Facebook will introduce ‘clear history’ tool this year -CFO

Depending on the account’s privacy settings, friends can post on its timeline, including in the comments of posts the person made before they passed away. However, if a memorialized account has a Tributes section, posts made after the day it was memorialized will be placed there.

Those Facebook users that have designated ‘legacy contacts’ to manage their accounts after they die have already been alerted by Facebook about the new feature through a notification that contained the euphemistic phrase ‘if your account is memorialized’.

Facebook describes the new Tributes section as a ‘space on memorialized profiles where friends and family can post stories, commemorate a birthday, share memories and more’.

The legacy contacts will also have more margin over tribute posts, for instance, they will be able to decide who can see and post tributes and who can delete posts. Those contacts can also change who can see posts the deceased person is tagged in or remove the tag.

These profiles are created after Facebook has been notified of a user’s death and can be managed afterward by a pre-determined person. The feature has not yet been made available to every user, as per Daily Mail.
