KARACHI: Sindh Health Department has  decided to upgrade three  major blood banks of Karachi city in collaboration with German Government to overcome the shortage of blood in  the city.

Director, Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA), Dr Durenaz Jamal, informed that Fatimid Foundation Blood Banks,  Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi Blood Bank and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Blood Bank would be upgraded in collaboration with German and Sindh Government soon.

 

She said these blood banks would be equipped with latest machinery very soon and will given the status of Regional Blood Transfusion Centres which will help meet the demand of blood. She  informed that four Regional Blood Transfusion Centres were constructed with financial and technical support German Government in SIndh and three others other are also being upgraded to overcome the shortage of blood.

 

Dr Durenaz Jamal said PC-1 for up-gradation of three blood banks has already approved and total number major blood banks reached four in Karachi city after up-gradation . She informed that three blood banks would be upgraded with cost of 30 million  which will donate by German Government and Sindh Government is also assured provision of 2.7 million.

 

She said voluntarily blood donation is very low in Sindh province therefore three blood banks are being upgraded to ensure provision of safe blood banks to patients in health facilities. She said Sindh has introduced centralized blood banking system in the province to  meet requirement of  blood.

She further informed that Regional Blood  Transfusion Centre Karachi which was constructed by German Government would be operational under public private partnership.
