An American research institute has created a prototype of what it is calling a ‘police robot’ that can help with traffic stops and make such roadside interactions safer for both police and people.

Rueben Brewer, an engineer from SRI International, an American nonprofit research institute, has created a prototype of a police robot, aimed to prevent accidents that happen when the police pull over drivers, reported IEEE Spectrum.

“With such dangerous interactions between people, maybe it’s time to send a robot in between them, one that can’t hurt or be hurt,” as per the video caption. “Our robot goes between people to keep everyone safe.”

Researchers create robot that looks after plants

The police bot isn’t created to replace human officers. It is attached to a telescopic robotic that extends from the side of the police car in order to reach the window of the pulled over vehicle in front of it. The officer is then able to communicate with the driver while sitting in the car through a webcam, as per Futurism.

From there over, the cop bot will take over and do it all from scanning the driver’s license through the incorporated barcode reader, spitting out a tickets and citations through a thermal printer. The robot also subtly deploy spike strip under a car to stop it from fleeing away.

Moreover, Brewer believes that his bot can help significantly reduce the numbers of possible accidents, according to Gizmodo.
