Soon enough in-ear gadgets that communicate with neural signals passing through our ears will be created, according to a scientist, which will monitor our brain and body in order to augment our lives.

A neuroscientist from Stanford University, Poppy Crum, claims that personal gadgets called ‘hearables’ are on their way that will monitor and interact with our brain through communicating with neural signals that pass through our ears, as per IEEE Spectrum.

The emerging tech will blur the lines drawn between artificial intelligence and biological intelligence, and hence will expand and enhance our thought processes, while also collaborating with our brains, claimed Crum.

A hearable will be able to help people isolate certain conversations or monitor neural health without the need of continuously being the topic of conversations by curious passers-by, and Crum believes that the ear is the logical preference for such a connection to the brain, as per Futurism.

“The ear is like a biological equivalent of a USB port,” as per Crum. “It is unparalleled not only as a point for ‘writing’ to the brain, as happens when our earbuds transmit the sounds of our favorite music, but also for ‘reading’ from the brain.”

Furthermore, Crum also believed that such technology for these wearable brain-computer interfaces could possibly be developed within the next five years. “When we do, hearables will constantly and silently assess and anticipate our needs and state of mind while helping us cope with the world around us,” Crum writes. “They will be our true life partners.”
