Bill Gates believes his greatest mistake was letting Google launch Android
Even one of the most successful tech entrepreneurs, Bill Gates, regrets upon his decisions and has recently revealed his ‘greatest mistake’ of his life was letting Google launch Android.
Speaking up at an event hosted by a venture-capital firm Village Global, Microsoft founder Bill Gates revealed that there is one mistake he regrets and it was giving Google the opportunity to launch Android.
Gates discussed how ‘in the software world, in particular for platforms, these are winner-take-all markets’. He said, “The greatest mistake ever is the whatever mismanagement I engaged in that caused Microsoft not to be what Android is. That is, Android is the standard phone platform – non-Apple form – phone platform. That was a natural thing for Microsoft to win”.

As per Independent, Gates further stated, “It really is winner takes all. There’s room for exactly one non-Apple operating system, and what’s that worth? $400 billion that would be transferred from company G [Google] to company M [Microsoft].”
The billionaire acknowledged that letting Google clinch that opportunity with Android was ‘one of the greatest mistakes of all time’. Regardless, Gates believed that Microsoft is still ‘very strong’, but had it not been for his mistake, the firm would have been ‘the leading company’ rather than ‘a leading company’.
“We are a leading company. If we got that one right, we would be the company. But oh well,” Gates said.
