All you need to know about Marvel’s new superhero movies
After concluding ‘Avengers’ series, Marvel has now announced a list of new superhero flicks at San Diego Comic-Con festival on Sunday, where Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made long-awaited mega-announcement of ‘Phase Four’ of superhero flicks.
First let's run though all the newly announced movies. ‘The Eternals’, ‘Black Widow’, ‘Shang-Chi: And the Legend of the Ten Rings’, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, ‘Wanda Vision, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, ‘What If..’, ‘Blade’, ‘Hawkeye’, ‘Loki’ and ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’
All these movies have been labeled as ‘Phase 4’ of Marvel universe. Let’s break down each of them to know what to expect from them.
The Eternals
‘The Eternals’, which will be directed by Chloé Zhao, was the first movie to be announced and was given a release date of November 6, 2020. The star-studded cast includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh and Don Lee.
The movie is about the group of incredible immortals, but through their journey fans will get to explore what it means to be human and humanity in our time on this planet. A race of immortal aliens sent to earth to protect humankind from the deviants.
Shang-Chi: And the Legend of the Ten Rings
Chinese-Canadian actor and stunt performer Simu Liu will be seen playing the lead role in the movie. The movie will arrive on February 21, 2021.
It had been long speculated that Marvel was gearing up to produce a Shang-Chi film. In the comics, the titular character is the son of a Chinese mastermind who has, on multiple occasions, attempted to conquer the world. Shang-Chi grows up learning to master martial arts and believes his father to be a humanitarian. However, those notions quickly unravel when he discovers his father’s true nature.
Black Widow
Set to release on May 1, 2020, film that finally promises to explore Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff in a real way is actually in production right now. Partly set after the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ the film will also dig into the Widow's past.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
After Captain America’s exit from Marvel’s universe, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan returning to the roles they've made their own on the big screen. The movie will be set after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ which saw Sam ‘Falcon’ Wilson become the new Cap. Mackie said in an interview before the panel that he'd already been fitted for the new Cap suit at least once.
WandaVision
Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany would be returning as Wanda ‘Scarlet Witch’ Maximoff and the artificial intelligence/infinity stone-powered being called Vision for WandaVision.
As far as we remember Vision died in ‘Infinity War’ and wasn’t seen in ‘End Game’ as well. For his part, Bettany is mostly surprised he'll be back in costume. “I have no idea. Last thing I knew I died in Infinity War so I literally have never been this confused in front of this many people. Every time we get to do this the stories get richer and richer and this is the richest of all... I hope you love it because this is going to be surprising and weird,” he said.
Loki
God of mischief Loki, still played by Tom Hiddleston, this will pick him up after ‘Avengers: Endgame’. He grabbed the Space Stone, vanishing to we don’t know where. This series will explain the ‘where’.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Natalie Portman will take up the mantle of Thor in the upcoming Marvel sequel ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, announced on Saturday. She'll be a new, female Thor, joining her will be Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in their respective roles. The movie will hit theatres on November 5, 2021.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
The Doctor Strange sequel now has the official title of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. That one arrives on May 7, 2021 and will also star Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. Director Scott Derrickson said the sequel will be the first ‘scary’ film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What If..
This one movie is pretty confusing even with its name. The basic concept for the movie is from the comicbook one-shot ideas that explore odd questions and situations in the Marvel universe. What if Agent Carter became Captain America, What if Loki found Thor's hammer? The list is endless.
The film cast includes many Marvel superheroes played by Michael B. Jordan, Sebastian Stan, Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Hayley Atwell, Chadwick Boseman, Karen Gillan, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Neal McDonough, Dominic Cooper, Sean Gunn, Natalie Portman, David Dastmalchian and many more.
Hawkeye
The movie revolves around Jeremy Renner’s character as Clint Barton. "The fiber of what Hawkeye is, at least what I think Hawkeye is, is a superhero without superpowers. And I get to teach someone else how to be a superhero without super powers,” Renner said. “I think that’s an amazing sentiment to share with people, because that means everyone can be a superhero."
Blade
Mahershala Ali is the new Blade. Blade is a take-no-shit vampire hunter who is also himself a vampire-human hybrid, giving him some abilities like super strength, speed, and healing, but without any of those pesky vampire weaknesses. The original Blade movie trilogy starred Wesley Snipes, who gave the character a level of absolute coolness that few actors could hope to match.
