Mahira Khan appointed as UNHCR goodwill ambassador for Pakistan

United Nations has appointed actress Mahira Khan as United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR) Goodwill ambassador for Pakistan.

UNHCR made the announcement through a video posted on its Twitter account. “We're delighted to announce that Mahira Khan is our newest Goodwill Ambassador for Pakistan," they tweeted.

"I feel proud that my country has shown such generosity towards three generations of Afghan refugees."

This was announced during a ceremony held at a local hotel on Wednesday. Minister of State for States & Frontier Regions (SAFRON) Shehryar Afridi, Assistant High Commissioner for Operations George Okoth-Obbo and UNHCR Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia & the Pacific Indrika Ratwatte were also present on the occasion.

Mahira said she felt privileged to have been chosen to serve for the noble cause. She added Pakistan has been hosting the Afghan refugees for the last four decades and she feels proud that Pakistan is one of the most generous countries of the world.

“By becoming UNHCR’s National Goodwill Ambassador I wish to stand behind such incredible acts of hospitality and humanity,” she said.
