The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday sought gazette notification of the provincial cabinet, which approved a summary to declare 50 newly-created Tehsils in merged and settled districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as local areas, as a requirement for holding the next local body elections in the province.
Hearing a case pertaining to provision of documents regarding delimitation for holding LG elections in the province, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) directed the officials concerned to submit the gazette copies of the cabinet pertaining to delimitation within four days.
The officials informed the Commission about the decision taken by the provincial cabinet which noted that under sections 4 and 5 of the KP Local Government Act, 2013, it was imperative to declare the new Tehsils established by the board of revenue under the law recently as the local areas for the Tehsil's government as the next local body elections would be conducted at the Tehsil subdivision level.
They said that out of 50 Tehsils, 25 are in merged districts and 24 in settled ones, adding the provincial cabinet of Chief Minister Mehmood Khan okayed 33 percent representation in Tehsil councils for women and five per cent for youth, farmers and minorities each.
