Rejecting the government's conditional decision to allow Nawaz Sharif to travel abroad for medical treatment, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif Thursday blamed the government of playing 'dirty politics' with the three-time former prime minister's health.
"The incumbent government by asking the PML-N to submit indemnity bonds to secure permission for Nawaz to travel abroad was, in fact, demanding "ransom" and the decision was not acceptable to the PML-N," he said while talking to media here at the PML-N Secretariat.
Condemning the game of PM Imran Khan and his political team against ex-PM Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N President said, "Indemnity bond is being demanded from the person who was elected Pakistan's PM for three times."
"God forbidden, if anything happened to Nawaz Sharif, Imran Niazi would be responsible," he said. "Unnecessary hurdles are being created for Nawaz's health. "There is no example of dirty politics in the country's history over the health of anyone."
Whether Nawaz Sharif had submitted any indemnity or surety bonds when he had voluntarily returned to the country from London in July 2018 after he was sentenced to serve prison time by a trial court in the Avenfield reference, he questioned?
"And today when two high courts have granted him (Nawaz) bail and that he can avail treatment in Pakistan or abroad, the government is doing politics on the issue. Leading lawyers of the country have criticised the [government] decision," Shahbaz said. "The selected Prime Minister (Imran Khan) is befooling the nation with his speeches; the PTI government has destroyed the economy and reputation of the country."
Answering a question, the PML-N President said: "Imran Khan can neither give National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) to anyone nor he can take it; the government is adopting cheap tactics by intentionally politicizing Nawaz Sharif matter."
Expressing concern over Nawaz's health, Shahbaz said, "It was high time we stopped doing politics on Nawaz's health; I did not think there would be such bitter politics done on someone's health. It is not just me who think politics is being done on Nawaz's health. Even a minister from Karachi accepted that politics was being done on his health," he said.
When Imran Khan was injured, Nawaz Sharif himself went to the hospital to inquire about his health. The government doctors themselves have said that Nawaz's treatment was not possible in Pakistan, but despite that a humanitarian issue was being made into a political one, the PML-N President said.
To another query, he said, "It is not less than a miracle that no internal bleeding happened despite low platelets of Nawaz." He said: "Nawaz's health was turned into a shuttlecock; doctors of the government-formed medical board had clearly stated that Nawaz should be moved abroad for treatment not available in Pakistan."
"The nation will not be able to tolerate if a mishap occurs due to the delay in Nawaz traveling abroad," the PML-N president stressed. He said unlike Nawaz, former military ruler retired Gen Pervez Musharraf and Minister of State for Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari were not asked to submit indemnity bonds before their names were taken off the no-fly list.
