KARACHI: The Supreme Court has referred former ambassador to US Hussain Haqqani’s application to record his statement on video link to the judicial commission, it was learnt from the media on Tuesday.

Haqqani had sought an equal opportunity like Mansoor Ijaz to record his statement before the Memogate Commission via video link from abroad and filed a petition in the apex court through his lawyer Asma Jehangir in this regard.

A 10-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the petition and transferred the responsibility to the judicial commission to decide to record Haqqani’s statement via video link.

Haqqani cited security fears for not returning to Pakistan.

The Supreme Court had allowed Haqqani to travel abroad on the condition that he return in four days to appear before the memogate commission.

On Monday, the court adjourned the hearing of the case when Asma Jahangir sought time to submit certain records in relation to the matter.

During the brief proceedings, Jahangir stated that the commission was of the view that Haqqani should appear in person before it to record his statement.

In her application, Asma had requested that the commission be directed to allow Haqqani to record his statement via video-link like Mansoor Ijaz.

Haqqani is neither an accused nor any FIR has been registered against him.

Counsel for one of the petitioners, Naseer Bhutta, in his objection stated that certain "derogatory" words in Haqqani's application be expunged.

The chief justice told Bhutta that he could submit an application in that regard.

On March 29, the same bench granted another six weeks to the commission to complete investigation in the case.

The court had retained its previous order to summon Haqqani on a four-day notice.
