Sui Northern plans to add RLNG in system in case of gas shortage in winters

  • In case of shortage, normal delivery will be continued for domestic customers by incorporating RLNG into the system.
  • RLNG is currently only offered to the industrial sector and CNG stations due to the cost.

In order to tackle the potential gas shortage in winters, the Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) has planned to add Re-Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) into the system if gas shortage occurs.

According to Sui Northern officials, despite the possible shortage of gas in severe cold and foggy season, domestic consumers will be provided gas on preferential basis. In case of shortage, normal delivery will be continued for domestic customers by incorporating RLNG into the system.

The authorities say that RLNG is currently only offered to the industrial sector and CNG stations due to the cost.

According to SNGPL, there is not much difference between gas supply and demand at this time. At present the gas supply in the system is 1631 MMCFD while the demand stands at 1663 MMCFD.

Meanwhile, the SNGPL has so far collected approximately Rs5.3 billion on account of urgent gas connection fee after it launched the ‘Fast Track' policy in February 2014, with the approval of OGRA.

“This amount is treated as ‘Operating Income' of SNGPL and utilized in accounting for the tariff of gas for consumers, so in this way the benefit goes to consumers at large," said a senior official.
