Indian diplomat lobbying for ‘Israel Model’ in Kashmir faces backlash

(Karachi) An Indian diplomat has triggered controversy after he called for adopting the ‘Israel Model’ in Occupied Kashmir. His views have been widely criticized not only in India but by the diplomatic community globally.

India’s Consul-General in New York, Sandeep Chakarvorty’s hour-long video on social media sent shock waves around the world with his comments. The Indian envoy reportedly expressed these views while addressing Kashmiri Hindus at an event in the United States a few days ago.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has already criticized the Indian envoy’s comments, saying these represent the India’s ‘Fascist mindset’.

The Indian diplomat’s address seemed more of a propaganda promoting the concept of ‘Hindutva’ and illegal actions of Israel against the Palestinians.

“Kashmiri culture is Indian culture is Hindu culture… None of us can imagine an India without Kashmir,” he said.

He said that Hindu Kashmiris, who migrated from Kashmir to other cities and countries after clashes in early 90s, should be given a chance to resettle in their homeland.

“I believe the security situation will improve, it will allow the refugees to go back, and in your lifetime, you will be able to go back … and you will be able to find security, because we already have a model in the world,” Chakarvorty remarked.

He said that the Indian government should follow Israel’s policy like the one in Middle East. Supporting his claim of fascism, the Indian diplomat said, “I don't know why we don't follow it. It has happened in the Middle East. If the Israeli people can do it, we can also do it," he said, adding that the current Indian leadership is "determined" to do so.”

He said Israel’s policies are those of a foreign occupier and India should adopt it to make Kashmir part of it.

However, the diplomatic  community in India and other states has condemned and objected to Chakarvorty's views. They termed his remarks as 'inappropriate' and a conspiracy to promote India's stance on Kashmir.
