District Police Officer (DPO), Kohat, Wahid Mehmood on Sunday said that the concept of rule of law educates us in the virtues of abiding by the rules and regulations governing the society.
He was addressing during the sixteenth round of UlasiTaroon, Youth Capacity Building Workshops organized by the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) in PRESTON University Kohat.
Wahid Mehmood emphasized that bridging and fostering public-police gaps and linkages is critical to uphold rule of law and much needed cooperation among the two - through an inclusive partnership - for a crime-free and peaceful society. There is a huge onus on public to responsibly report information about crimes and other activities jeopardizing law and order situation in the society.
Only by practicing the ideals of tolerance, acceptance and patience, can responsible citizenship be nurtured. The DPO Kohat stressed that the youth, in order to achieve success, need to nourish their minds with positivity and gratitude.
Prof. Faisal Shehzad from Islamia College University of Peshawar noted that the importance of critical thinking is vital for the progress of society.
He said the example of the state is like a vehicle while we can call the government as driver of this vehicle. If the driver is sensible and respectful to the law, people in the state vehicle will reach the destination soon and safe, but otherwise the citizens of the state may face difficulties.
Shehzad added that for an effective democracy, all the democratic institutions should observe their constitutional limits and do not interfere into each other's domains.
Dr. Asmat ullah Khan, Vice Chancellor, PRESTON University Kohat urged youth to exhibit tolerance and respect for diversity. Misunderstanding of the cultural, traditional, religious and linguistic diversity leads to polarization in the society.
He said such topics as the rule of law, tolerance, human rights and democratic principles are counted among the fundamental attributes of Islam, and it is our misfortune that we have forgotten these qualities and is now reluctant to adopt them just because they are coming through the West.
He said that Islam teaches us to resolve the conflict and provide the rights of women; unfortunately we are far from these Islamic principles. He urged the youth to pay attention to their studies and move forward with positive thinking and respect for their elders.
