Experts at a seminar on Tuesday said that the country can produce as many as 5000 MW from the biomass.

They addressed community symposia on Public Awareness Campaign for recycling home garbage employing waste to energy concept arranged by Department of Energy System Engineering, University of Agriculture Faisalabad at the Auditorium of Center for Advanced Studies UAF. The campaign is funded by HEC as well as Faisalabad Waste Management Company.

Chairing the session, UAF Vice Chancellor, Dr Muhammad Ashraf directed UAF engineers to design a bio-gasification plant in which low-priced electricity will be produced by using solid waste and biomass in order to promote alternative ways of energy. Talking about waste to energy concept, he said that the waste is segregated at household level or at transfer station in specified manner and biological treated to convert into the renewable gas.

Talking about alternative way of energy, he said that our country was having the huge potential to use the solar as sun wave is standing at 1600 micromole per square. He said that in Europe it is only 900 micromole per square. He said that the model is being used in many developed nations.

Faculty of Agriculture Engineering Dr Allah Buksh said that the alternative sources of energy like wind, bio energy and bio fuel need to be applied to meet the energy demand in the country. He said that university was making all out efforts to develop technologies for farmer and industry at affordable prices.

Chairman Energy System Engineering Dr Anjum Munir said that the country spend as many as 14 billion US dollar on the import of the oil whereas we could not tap the potential from other sources of energy.

Dr Muhammad Rizwan Tabassum said that they are creating the awareness about the segregation of waster of houses level to get the maximum organic waste. FWMC Operation Manager Engineer Ejaz said that they were making all-out efforts for utilization of waste into the energy. He said we have to narrow down the gap of industry academic linkages.

Engineer Muhammad Ali Qamar said that waste to energy is environment friendly, cost effective and sustainable way the waste disposal. He said that effective waste management would also help address the issue of environmental degradation.
