The Tokyo Commodity Exchange rubber contract for June delivery was down 1.7 yen, or 0.9%, at 198.3 yen per kg by 0206 GMT, tracking weakness in Shanghai futures.
Key Shanghai futures were trading 1% lower at 12,700 yuan per tonne. The US dollar was quoted around 109.52 yen, compared with around 109.35 yen on Wednesday afternoon.
Oil prices rose with Brent up about 0.2% and US crude gaining 0.3% Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock average was up about 0.5%.
