Newborn infant burnt alive at NICH

A newborn baby girl was burnt alive when an intensive care unit (ICU) caught fire at Karachi's National Institute of Child Health (NICH) on Thursday. According to director NICH Dr Jamal Raza, four-day old baby was kept in incubator in surgical ICU of the facility when a fire broke out near the incubator early morning that led to burn the baby alive within no time.

The NICH director said, "We share our sympathies with the parents of the baby." This is the third incident in a row as a few days ago, fire incidents were occurred in the operation theatre of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) and the nursery in the gynaecology ward of Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center (JPMC).

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident and sought a detailed report from the director NICH. Meanwhile, Sindh Health Department has constituted a four-member enquiry committee to probe into the fire incident under the chairmanship of the special secretary of the health department. The other members include Dr Sikander Memon, Dr Zulfiqar and Dr Rubina.
