Recent survey of marriage season reveals that only 2 percent couples underwent thalassemia test, 98 percent ignored it, while constant growing numbers of thalassemic majors in our population is quite alarming, warned CSR activist for Thalassemia Eradication from Pakistan, Ateeq Ur Rehman.

He informed that in recent wedding season key factors were ignored. A survey was conducted which reveals that only 2 percent of married couples have undergone thalassemic test before marriage. Rest 98 percent would become husband and wife marrying without any test.

This negligence is utmost damaging and devastating resulting into a negative scenario where people are not taking the awareness seriously. In 2020, it is expected that the number of thalassemic majors will surpass limit to an unmanageable figure.

He said that Pakistan being a poor country and below poverty line cannot take an extra burden of such fatal disease where 88 percent of Pakistanis are poor and only 12 percent belong to elite or rich class. Under the circumstances sustaining the life of a thalassemic major is not only cumbersome but difficult and expensive also.

Elites can afford it but a common man cannot. Rising Inflation, cost of medicine, consulting fees of experts and dedicated doctors (like haematologist, orthopaedics, eye, ENT, pulmonologist, neurologist, urologist, etc.), cost of ICU, laboratory, day care, blood bank is very expensive and beyond the reach of a common man.
