ChildLife Foundation, at currently operating in Sindh and Balochistan's public sector teaching hospitals where, within past 10 years, it has saved lives of around 3 million, is all set to expand operations in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Speaking to journalists here, Dr Ahson Rabbani CEO, ChildLife Foundation said that "Pakistan's largest mortality is that of children under-5 years of age. Approximately 400,000 children die every year, though 50 percent of these deaths are preventable if the Emergency Rooms are fully functional", he added.
"Keeping this in view, Child Life has transformed Pediatric Emergency Rooms of all government teaching hospitals in Sindh and Balochistan while we are in talks with the authorities of Capital Territory teaching hospitals, KPK and Punjab to expend operations in children emergency services," said Dr added.
Answering a question regarding the expansion of services to the teaching hospitals of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, Dr Rabbani said that his organization is willing to extend services across the country, if the regional governments cooperating on the lines of Sindh government. He said that operating children emergency services at a teaching hospital in Sindh costs Rs 100 million per annum of which 70 percent is financed by the Sindh government while rest is being beard by the organization which comes through donations.
He added that 3 million children have been treated up til now and with the upcoming Emergency Rooms 1 million children will be treated every year. The Survival of critically ill children has quadrupled.
Dr Ahson said, "Our vision is to transform all 40+ Pediatric Emergency Rooms in government teaching hospitals of Pakistan. Also, he added, Tele-Medicine Satellite Centers will also be established at government Hospitals across all tehsils hospitals".
Currently, Tele-Medicine sites are operational at Sindh Government Hospital New Karachi; District Headquarter Hospital, Mithi; and Syed Abdullah Shah Institute of Medical Sciences, Sehwan, and Civil Hospital, Ghotki besides all ChildLife ERs in Sindh & Balochistan.
He added that no child in Karachi is 30 minutes away from world-class Emergency Rooms' network set up by ChildLife Foundation at five government hospitals in Karachi.
It is pertinent to mention here that based on Sustainable Development Goals all countries in the world are aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1000 live births by 2030 and we are working for that goal.
Dr Ahson said that the mission of ChildLife Foundation is 'Saving the Future of Pakistan' by facilitating rapid access to quality urgent medical care and to intervene with established cost-effective preventive measures.
The said Children Emergency Rooms are: Dr Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi; National Institute of Child Health, Karachi; Sindh Government Hospital Korangi-5, Lyari General Hospital, Karachi; Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi; People Medical College, Nawabshah; Chandka Medical College, Larkana, Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College, Sukkur ,Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Hyderabad (Feb 2020); and Civil Hospital, Quetta (Feb 2020).
