K-Electric on Thursday launched its School Safety Awareness Drive 2020, with an objective to impart the very basic safety education amongst as many as 100,000 children of over 300 educational institutions.
The Karachi based power utility's CSR initiative comes months after some 35 ill-fated people mostly children fell prey to rain related electrocutions across the metropolis.
These fatal incidents raised questions about KE's operations. Also, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) held KE responsible for the 19 out of the total 35 deaths from electrocutions and prolonged power breakdowns, directing the power utility to improve its operations.
The inaugural event 'Safety Awareness Championship 2020' held at a local hotel attended by heads of educational institutions, senior government officials, representatives of the media and other stakeholders.
Zehra Mehdi Director Sustainability KE said that under this safety drive, over 100,000 children in Karachi, between the ages of 8 to 16 years, will be educated about basic principles of general safety, electrical safety, hazards of power theft and benefits of energy conservation with the aim to engage and sensitise students through activities including quiz competitions and drills.
