The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, on Tuesday talked to the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif over the phone to discuss the prevailing political situation and opposition's future line of action.

According to a spokesperson for JUI-F, Shahbaz Sharif, the president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) called the JUI-F chief, and urged the JUI-F leader to make efforts for the unity of the opposition parties so that a unanimous line of action could be taken against the government on political and economic matters.

The PML-N senior leader and president Punjab chapter Rana Sanaullah, while confirming this, said that his party chief Shahbaz Sharif has stressed the need for the unity of opposition parties and extended all possible cooperation to the JUI-F.

Rana said that efforts were under way to bring opposition parties on the same page with a single-point agenda of steering the country out of the current economic and political challenges.

On the other day, leaders of Awami National Party (ANP) also called on Maulana Fazl and discussed political matters.

The JUI-F chief in public gatherings recently has started lambasting the leadership of major political parties including the PML-N and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) over their support to the amendment in the Army Act. While launching the second phase of the Azadi March, Maulana Fazl has publicly expressed serious reservations about the leadership of the PPP and the PML-N.

He said that both the parties participated in the November 2019 Azadi March only symbolically.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan Ambassador to Pakistan Shakirullah Atif on Tuesday also called on the JUI-F chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, at his residence. According to the JUI-F spokesperson, Maulana Fazl and the Afghan ambassador talked about the ongoing the US and Taliban talks as well as other regional matters.

The Afghan Ambassador also invited Maulana Fazl to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani.
