The National Assembly's Standing Committee on Interior on Wednesday expressed its displeasure over the absence of inspector-general (IG) of Islamabad police and sought report from the Secretary Interior about failure of the top police officer to show up before the panel.
The committee, which met with Raja Khurram Nawaz in the chair, also sought report from the director general, Intelligence Bureau (IB) for using the name of the bureau for a housing society. The committee also expressed concerns over the delay in issuing passports to the citizens despite applying in the urgent category. The committee chairman pointed out that the citizens applying for passports in the urgent category were also facing delay in issuance of passports. Briefing the committee, the director general (passports), said the capacity of issuing the passports of the Directorate of the Immigration was 10,000 to 12,000 daily.
He said that an SMS service was also being introduced so that the public get to know about the stages of passport preparation. About the murder of Shahnaz Ansari, the deceased member of Sindh Assembly, SSP Jamshoro told the committee that the MPA never demanded security, adding the letter written by the late MPA to the IG, was received on the second day of her assassination.
He informed the committee that all the accused had been arrested in the case.
About the murder of a journalist, Aziz Memon, the DIG Police, Karachi informed the committee that no sign of torture or poison on the body of the journalist was found in the medical report.
However, he said that a report regarding a possible heart attack was yet to come. The chairman's committee questioned the DIG as to why the reporter was not provided the security he had requested for. To which, the DIG replied that the police could not provide security to every journalist. The chairman's committee directed the police to resolve problems being faced by the public. About the affairs in the IB Housing Society, the chairman expressed anguish over using the name of the premier intelligence agencies for deceiving the masses.
The committee also instructed deputy commissioner Islamabad to visit on the spot and prepare a report about the affairs in the housing society and also summon the DG IB to its next meeting.
