The opposition political parties on Tuesday said that a joint opposition could move a breach of privilege motion against National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri on breach of the house for not taking business on private members' day.
"The deputy speaker gave unlimited time to a minister [Murad Saeed] on private members' day of the house, and did not take up the legislative business of the opposition members. It is breach of the Parliament and we can move a privilege motion against the deputy speaker," the opposition members, Abdul Qadir Patel of the PPP, Khalid Ranjha of the PML-N, and Abdul Shakoor of the JUI-F, expressed these views in a joint news conference outside the parliament.
Abdul Qadir Patel said that it was private members' day of the house and the members particularly opposition members had prepared bills for legislation but the deputy speaker did not take up this business and gave unlimited time to a minister. "We want to discuss legislation and the issues of the people including price hike and the economic situation but the deputy speaker did not give us time." "The deputy speaker breached the privilege of the house for not taking business of the members. The deputy speaker already has become controversial and he is sitting on the stay order of the court. We can move a breach of privilege motion against him," he said.
Khalid Ranjha said that today's session was of no use as many bills of the members could not be moved for litigation because whole time was given to a minister. "We also wanted to talk on economy and inflation in the country but the deputy speaker did not give us the floor. The deputy speaker breached the privilege of the house and we can bring breach of privilege motion against him." "The PTI government is not giving importance to the parliament and wants to run the affairs of the country through ordinances," he said.
Abdul Shakoor of the JUI-F said that the opposition members had wanted to discuses legislation for the people but deputy speaker did not give us floor. "We should boycott the house whenever the business of legislation is not taken up." He said that the JUI-F was fully behind the other opposition parties the PPP and the PML-N on this issue.
Shazia Marri of the PPP also claimed that the deputy speaker was running the house in such way that he was making the chair controversial. She said that amid strong protest of the opposition members, the National Assembly had passed as many as nine ordinances in the form of bills without referring them to the relevant standing committees on November 8, 2019. Marri said that today there were six bills which were already passed by the Senate regarding school children, colleges, workers on the agenda but the deputy speaker did not take them up.
