The Chairman of Saylani Welfare Trust, Maulana Bashir Farooqi, has said that 52 percent of Karachi's population who resides in the slum areas is suffering from hunger.
"People will be victimized daily," he said. "Out of a population of 22 million people, about 0.2 million people benefit from the Saylani Welfare Trust everyday," he said.
Sixty to 70 percent of the people living in Karachi were their family's breadwinners, and daily-wage workers were unemployed now, and the government was unable to cope with this situation alone, he said.
Maulana Bashir Farooqi said that Saylani distributed more than 113,000 of Roti, tons of Biryani, and five-hundred liters of milk besides free ration bags among more than 20,800 families.
"The work is being done on a daily basis," he said. "Saylani is doing all this on its own, but still we cannot reach all the houses because we are not the government who has the database of all the residents."
He appealed to all the corporate bodies having businesses in Pakistan to move forward to help those in need from their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. "Lives of millions of people are at stake because of this lockdown," he said.
