French soft wheat shipments outside the EU last month reached their highest level for March in at least 10 years, Refinitiv data showed, as exporters continued to meet brisk demand despite
logistical headaches caused by the coronavirus epidemic.
Soft wheat exports to destinations outside the European Union totalled 1.63 million tonnes, the highest March volume in figures going back to the 2009/10 season, an initial estimate based on Refinitiv loading data showed.
The non-EU soft wheat shipments also marked the biggest monthly volume so far in the 2019/20 season that started last July, surpassing an estimated 1.46 million tonnes in February.
Last month's exports took the total shipped to non-EU destinations since the start of 2019/20 to 9.4 million tonnes.
French exports will need to average 1.1 million tonnes over the next three months to reach the 12.7 million tonnes forecast by farm office FranceAgriMer for the full 2019/20 season to June 30.
China has emerged as a big outlet for French wheat this season alongside traditional markets in North Africa, with one million tonnes already loaded for China since the start of the 2019/20 season.
Exporters handled the high volume last month while facing transport and personnel difficulties created by a French nationwide lockdown from March 17 to counter the spread of the novel coronavirus.
