Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said he was saddened to hear about the death of countless expatriate Pakistanis who had fallen prey to the novel coronavirus.

The condolence from the prime minister came only after the expatriate Pakistanis slammed and criticized him for not offering condolences to them over the deaths of their loved ones due to the Covid-19.

In a series of tweets, the prime minister expressed his concern and offered his condolences to the families of the deceased. He said that many of the victims served on the frontlines against the deadly virus.

"I am saddened by the news of the death of countless Pakistanis living and working abroad who have fallen victim to the Covid-19. Many died, while serving in the frontline of the global war," he tweeted.

The prime minister also wished a speedy recovery to those battling the virus, and said Pakistan would never forget all those citizens living in various countries and playing a critical role in Pakistan's development through remittances and charity work. "We can never forget all of you far away from Pak[istan] who continue to do us proud & are our greatest asset," he added.

At least 80 Pakistanis were earlier reported to have died of the Covid-19 in New York City, while deaths were also reported in various parts of the world.
