PM orders release of all clerics, worshippers arrested for violating mosque restrictions during lockdown

• A delegation of religious scholars called on Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad.

Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered on Monday the release of all ulema, clerics and worshippers arrested for violating government's restrictions on congregational prayers in mosques during coronavirus lockdown.

Addressing a press conference alongside Minister for Religious Affairs Noor ul Haq Qadri, Special Assistant Special to PM on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said the PM took notice that these clerics were not released and ordered the immediate release of them.

Awan further said that the prime minister has asked his economic advisers to look into Mufti Taqi Usmani and Mufti Muneebur Rehman's suggestion of having an interest-free economy.

She also revealed that the government will also introduce an education programme for Madrassah students.

Earlier, a delegation of religious scholars called on the prime minister in Islamabad. In the meeting with the PM, the religious scholars assured the premier of their full coordination to implement the decision of precautionary measures taken by the government.

On Saturday, President Arif Alvi announced a 20-point policy agenda regarding prayer congregations and Namaz-e-Taraweeh during Ramazan amid coronavirus crisis. The strategy was announced following a meeting between the president and religious scholars.
