While terming smuggling a curse for the economy, Prime Minister Imran Khan has sought a comprehensive list on measures so far taken and people involved in two weeks.
The prime minister, while chairing a meeting on the issue of smuggling and provision of essential commodities, also directed chief secretaries to make sure that the benefit of reduction in petroleum prices reaches common man.
The meeting was briefed on the measures so far taken by the various departments to deal with the menace of smuggling since the promulgation of the ordinance to curb it.
The prime minister directed that all the departments should come up with comprehensive reports detailing measures so far taken by them to deal with the problem of smuggling, and about the people involved in the menace within two weeks.
The premier stated that smuggling threatens food security and causes irreparable damage to the industrial sector.
Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) briefed the meeting on the measures so far taken since the introduction of the ordinance against smuggling.
The provincial chief secretaries briefed the meeting on the steps taken to deal with the menace of smuggling.
On the issue of essential commodities, the prime minister said the government's objective to reduce prices of petroleum products was to provide relief to the people.
The provincial governments presented reports of actions taken against hoarders and profiteers.
The prime minister directed that provincial governments must play their role in ensuring that benefit of reduction in petroleum prices reaches the people in the form of decline in the prices of essential commodities.
Minister of Industries and Production briefed the meeting on the steps taken with regard to possible reduction in the prices of cement, steel bars, cooking oil, and others commodities.
The provincial chief secretaries also briefed the meeting about wheat production, harvesting and overall situation of commodity in the country.
The meeting was attended by the provincial chief secretaries and the IGs attended the meeting through video link.
