KARACHI: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of millions of people globally and the worst-hit are the under-privileged, who are now also faced with the looming threat of food shortages.

In Pakistan, too, this is one of the major causes of concern for the authorities especially in remote areas like the desert region of Thar in Sindh.

To play its role, Shanghai Electric Group, the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of power generation and industrial equipment, has been providing regular food supplies to households living in villages located around its coal mining plant and power plant in Thar.

Sino Sindh Resource (Pvt) Ltd and Shanghai Electric Engineering Consulting Company, with its branch office in Karachi, carried out the third stage of the provision of food supplies to around 800 households in villages located in area where the Thar Block-1 Integrated Coal Mine-Power project is located.

“We are doing our best to help the community in this time of need,” said Mr Wang Xiao Fan, Company Chairman of SSRL and Shanghai Electric Engineering Consulting Company Pakistan Branch.

The food packages provided to the villagers included all basic necessities including rice, floor, cooking oil, sugar, tea, etc. and were handed over to the villagers regularly throughout Ramazan.

Since 1993, Shanghai Electric has provided electricity infrastructure services in Pakistan, and has a rich history of cooperation and friendship.

SSRL was incorporated in Pakistan in 2011 as an overseas subsidiary controlled by Shanghai Electric (group) Corporation, specialising in coal mining. It belongs to the integrated coal and electricity project in block 1 of Thar coalfield, which includes the construction and operation of an open-pit coal mine with an annual output of 7.8 million tons and a 2X660MW supercritical lignite power station. It is a priority project of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
