Senate body to review appointments of envoys
Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani has tasked the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs to review the appointments of ambassadors and high commissioners, from the private sector, made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Pakistan's diplomatic missions worldwide over the last five years.
The chairman Senate has also tasked the Senate panel to review appointments in MOFA and its diplomatic missions abroad on provincial/regional quotas. In this regard, the chairman Senate has written a letter to Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, a press release from Senate Secretariat said on Friday.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed from Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) heads the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The chairman Senate has tasked the committee to review the aforesaid matter in accordance with Rule 166 (1) of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate 2012, the Senate press release said.
The Rule 166 (1) reads, "Functions of Standing Committees.- (1) A Standing Committee shall examine a Bill, subject or matter referred to it by the Senate or the Chairman and shall submit its report to the Senate or to the Chairman, as the case may be, with such recommendations including suggestions for legislation, if any, as it may deem necessary.
In the case of a Bill, the Committee shall also examine whether the Bill violates, disregards or is otherwise not in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution."
