KARACHI: The Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) has asked Pakistan to rename Gaddafi Cricket Stadium in Lahore. The request comes after the recent overthrowing of the Gaddafi government in Libya late last year.

The request comes after the NTC adopted a law that declares the glorification of the former Libyan Dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and his family members a punishable offence.

The message was received by the Pakistan’s embassy in Tripoli. However the stance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is undecided. Sources say that Ministry of Foreign Affairs might ask the Libyan government that will be formed after the nationwide election on July 7th, 2012, to suggest the new name itself as the move may strengthen diplomatic ties and develop friendly relations between the two countries.

The Gaddafi Stadium is the largest cricket stadium in Pakistan with a capacity to seat 600,000 spectators. Previously the Gaddafi Stadium was known as the Lahore Stadium but it was renamed in the honor of the vehement support and stance of Colonel Gaddafi on Pakistan’s right to develop nuclear weapons at the second OIC’s summit held at Lahore, when Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was holding the office of Prime Minister of Pakistan.
