KARACHI: Pakistan’s former cricket coach Waqar Younis is no longer in contention to become Australia’s new bowling coach after being turned down this week following an interview.
Cricket Australia is searching for a replacement for Craig McDermott, who vacated the position in May, and younis was keen to take on the position and work with Australia’s emerging crop of fast bowlers.
CA was in talks with Younis to replace bowling coach Craig McDermott who quit after Australia’s tour of West Indies in May. However, Waqar revealed that the talks had failed and he was not in contention for the position anymore.
"I was interested, but it didn’t work out between me and Cricket Australia," The Dawn quoted younis, as saying.
Younis, who resigned as Pakistan’s coach last year citing personal reasons, is based in Sydney and was eager to work with the Australia team.
He further said what he was offering was different from what CA was looking for.
Younis will be coaching a team in the Sri Lanka Premier League followed by the Twenty20 World Cup where he will be involved with commentary.
Taking 416 One Day International wickets and 373 Test scalps, the veteran was considered a master at reverse swing.
After retiring from the game in 2004, the player turned to coaching and worked as the national team mentor till 2010 before resigning from his duties on health and personal ground, and focusing on doing commentating.
