KARACHI: McDonald has officially unveiled its biggest ever restaurant at the Olympic Park which is expected to serve around 50,000 Big Macs, 100,000 portions of fries and 30,000 milkshakes during the London Olympics.
The two-story, 3,000-square-meter unit is one of four McDonald's that is built specially for
the summer games.
It has 1,500 seats and will employ around 500 staff for the Games.
McDonald’s used the opening of the flagship restaurant to announce that the Olympic Park
restaurants will see the most diverse menu ever with a wide variety of tastes and
nutritional values.
For the first time at the Olympic Games, McDonald's is offering Happy Meals, which include
the options of a fruit or vegetable and low-fat dairy, as part of an initiative to help improve healthy eating for children.
McDonald's president and chief executive Don Thompson inaugurated the restaurant and briefed
that customer purchases of fruits and vegetables in ‘Happy Meals’ have more than quadrupled
in markets making the majority of the McDonald's business since the Vancouver 2010 Winter
Games.
"McDonald’s has the unique ability to encourage kids to get into the routine of enjoying
foods like fruits and vegetables in a way that is fun for them and convenient for parents,"
Thompson said.
In addition to constructing the largest restaurant in the system, McDonald’s is also
preparing to hire its largest Olympic crew.
The crew will be outfitted in a new, 100-percent recycled uniform conceived by fashion
designer Wayne Hemingway.
“We're using the scope of our global reach to deliver positive messages in a way that is fun
and meaningful, and we’re confident we can play an appropriate role in helping address the
important subject of children's well-being," he said.
The 2012 Olympic Games in London have started from July 27 and will last till August 12,
2012.
