KARACHI: A Russian city official in St. Petersburg has launched a campaign calling for Madonna’s prosecution after the singer spoke about controversial gay rights at a concert this week.
During her shows in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the pop star handed out pink bracelets and spoke out against the legislation which restricts homosexuality in Russia.
The city leader Vitaly Milonov has accused her of crossing a line.
Milonov believed she should be prosecuted for violating a Russian ban on public statements
supporting gay rights and homosexuality.
He considered her onstage comments to be “illegal propaganda”.
He has now called on his fellow city officials to fine the singer and the concert promoters
for her behavior.
The 'Material girl' hit-maker asked fans in her concert to show their “love and appreciation for the gay
community,” and said “all people should be treated with dignity, respect and love.”
