KARACHI: Saudi Arabia is planning to build a new city completely meant for women as it offers to combine Islamic Sharia law being followed in the Kingdom along-with the career minded females to pursue their work.
The controversial city’s construction will reportedly begin next year.
It is thought the Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon) has been asked to bring the
country up to date with the rest of the modern world.
This new city is hoped to allow women to work without defying the Saudi Arabia’s Islamic laws.
The municipality in the Eastern city of Hafuf is expected to attract 500 million riyals
(£84m) in investments.
It will create around 5,000 jobs in the textiles, pharmaceuticals and food processing
industries.
It will have women-run firms and production lines.
As per the statistics, only 15 percent of Saudi women are working.
Last September, King Abdullah had announced that women will be able to vote and run in the
2015 local elections.
The ultra-conservative Muslim Kingdom is the only place on Earth where women’s driving is
prohibited.
Saudi Arabia made a historic move at the London Olympics by sending Muslim female athletes
to the Games for the first time.
