The Governor of Punjab Salman Taseer, who was killed by a member of the Rawalpindi Elite Force Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, on Tuesday, was laid to rest in the Cavalry Ground graveyard with full civilian honours after funeral prayers of the slain governor were offered at the Governor House here on Wednesday.
A large number of people and government officials, including Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Chairman Senate and others participated in the funeral prayers.
Strict security measure were taken during the funeral prayers while about 4,000 police and rangers personnel were deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident.
On this occasion, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) workers raised slogans in Lahore and other cities and offered funeral prayers all over the country.
A three-day mourning has been announced while all businesses were closed in the main cities of the country to mourn the late governor and party member.
Taseer's soyem will be held at 2 PM at the Governor house on Thursday.
