ISLAMABAD: Members of the Parliament from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa belonging to different major political parties met Deputy Speaker, Faisal Karim Kundi and Chairperson Prime Ministers' Polio Monitoring Cell, Shahnaz Wazir Ali here on Friday.
The Deputy Speaker said that the National and Provincial legislators should work in harmony to eradicate polio.
He was of the opinion that the elected representatives should participate actively in the polio campaigns and should be seen working in the field so that the people are motivated and encouraged.
The parliamentarians in the discussion highlighted the fact that for the eradication of polio work needs to be done at the Union Council level.
They emphasized that the local government system is the key for implementing the polio eradication strategy at the grass roots level.
In her remarks, Shahnaz Wazir Ali said that maintaining the cold chain is the basic need to eradicate polio from the province.
She said that the local administration should involve the elected representatives of the area in the polio campaigns and also should invite them to the meetings of the local committees to monitor the outcome of the polio campaigns.
She thanked PILDAT and hoped that the members of the Parliament from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will work in harmony to show that they have the political will and resolve to address the menace of polio in the province.
Ahmed Bilal Mehboob, Executive Director-PILDAT, welcomed the participants and while giving the background of the briefing session said that the elected representatives can play a very effective role in the specific context of eliminating Polio.
Members of the Parliament from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Senator Farah Aqil, Senator A.N. Bangash, Engr. Usman Khan, MNA, Senator Shahi Syed, Senator Farhat Abbas, Mr. Humayun Saif Ullah Khan, MNA, Senator Ahmed Hassan, Senator Haji Ghulam Ali and Azmat Khan, MNA were present.
The briefing session to discuss the "Immunization Campaigns in the Flood hit areas - Challenges and Way Forward" was arranged for the members of the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by PILDAT.
