LAHORE: Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran chief Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri threatened Sunday to lead a protest march on the capital if the government fails to begin electoral reforms within three weeks.
Addressing a crowd of at least 100,000 in here, Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri said that meaningful reforms were needed as country approaches general elections expected in the spring.
"Elections without reforms will be meaningless and people will reject results if they are held under the existing system," said Qadri.
"I give the government a deadline of three weeks to establish an honest and independent body that will introduce electoral reforms and pave the way for free and fair elections."
Qadri said political and economic system had "collapsed", as it revolved around the wealthy, landed aristocrats, and industrialists, and failed to allow honest people to reach parliament.
If the government failed to meet his demands by January 10, then followers of his movement would take part in a "long march" on the capital Islamabad, and would remain there until their demands were met, he said.
Police said at least 100,000 people participated in Sunday's rally.
