Supreme Court says Senate elections to be held through secret ballot

A five-member larger bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed opined that Senate elections would be held under Article 226 of the Constitution through secret balloting.
The SC also said that the Election Commission of Pakistan should use the latest technology to ensure fair and transparent elections.

ECP rejects PTI's objections, accepts nomination papers of Yousaf Raza Gilani for Senate elections

A PTI Senate candidate from Islamabad Fareed Rehman accused Gilani of concealing his conviction in a contempt of court case back in 2012.
Since a period of five years had elapsed since Gilani's conviction, he stands qualified for contesting election to the Senate from federal capital, ECP ruled.

ECP to start receiving nomination papers today for Senate elections scheduled for March 3

Issuing a schedule for the Senate elections, set to be held on March 3, the ECP said candidates can file nomination papers with the returning officer on February 12 and February 13.
The Senate polls will see the election of 48 senators.

SC to hear presidential reference on Senate elections on Feb 2

Notices to Advocate Generals, the Election Commission of Pakistan, Chairman Senate, Speaker National Assembly and the Speakers of provincial assemblies has been issued in this regard.
The registrar’s office of the apex court had earlier fixed the case for hearing on January 18.

In his reply submitted in the apex court, the chairman said that Senate polls are held through secret ballot as per the Election Act 2017.
“The Parliament has the prerogative to make amendments in the law, while the Supreme Court has right to interpret the constitution,” he wrote.
